Headboard and Bedroom Makeover

For the last few months I have been saving up to decorate our master bedroom. Finally, I finished school and had the time to do it. I knew that I wanted to have a tufted headboard, but they can cost upwards of 1,000 dollars and my budget for the bedroom was like... a fraction of that. So, I started to Google how to make your own tufted headboard and I stumbled upon this blog Brick City Love in which she does a tutorial on how to do this sort of thing. Hers was a little different because she fitted hers inside a wooden frame and we wanted a more clean lined look - also it was much easier to do a rectangle than what she did. Here is the link to her tutorial part 1 and there you can also find part 2 and part 3.

Supplies we used:
 - staple gun
 - linen fabric - got it on sale at Joanne's
 - 2 inch thick green foam
 - batting
 - pillow
 - fabric covered button kit
 - spray adhesive
 - skills saw
 - screws
 - buttons and heavy upholstery thread

After we determined the size of headboard we wanted and purchased the fabric, we went by Lowes and had them cut it to size

Then we marked where our button wholes would be and Uriah drilled the holes.. we wanted a  large diamond pattern

Uriah fabricated a wall mount by using a 1 x 4 and cutting it at a diagonal. One section was screwed into the wall and one section was screwed onto the back of the headboard.

We made the buttons by purchasing the large metal button kits at Joanne's. In the kit, they give you a stencil to cut out the fabric to size and a tool to secure the fabric to the metal pieces.

We cut the greenish blue foam to the size of the plywood frame

... and used spray adhesive to secure it to the plywood

Then we brought the headboard inside...  We used a long needle to poke through the foam first and find where our  holes had been on the plywood. When we marked the spots for each hole, we used a hole saw piece to bore out the foam so we would have room for the buttons to be pushed down into...Then we cut the batting over our holes in the form of an X

I wanted the tufting to be big so I took apart an old pillow and used the batting in that to make the space  in between the diamonds more fluffy.

Then we stapled down the batting
Using this...

Ironed out our linen fabric ...

... and placed it on our headboard

We started in the middle of the right side of the headboard

This is what the underside of the headboard looked like... I used heavy upholstery thread and small clear buttons to secure the larger buttons on the top of the head board.

taaadaaa...
** I want it to be known that I could not have done this by myself - this was definitely a two person job. Uriah put his design and handyman skills to work for this one. **

Cost of the bedroom makeover:

Headboard: $120-$130. (I probably could have done it a little cheaper by sourcing out some cheaper foam and batting.)
End tables: $60 for both. (craigslist find)
Recent additions:
Dresser: $30 (found at a garage sale across the street)
Silver bedside lamps: $10 each - target - I still need to purchase shades
Curtain rod: $30

It is still a work in progress and I will keep you updated... Right now I am a little distracted with the nursery... Her crib came in yesterday! I can not wait for Uriah do get home so we can put it together!
